Paracosm is an original character game based on the Persona series of video games, set in a future where virtual reality has become a household product.

Characters are high school students at the historic Matsubayashi High School in Suginami-ku, a ward in Tokyo. They are students from all walks of life, united at a school once known for creating a generation of great minds. They are not ordinary students for long, before their eyes are opened up by following a blue butterfly, and awaken to their Persona, a manifestation of a person's personality that allows them to fight Shadows.

The city is blurring the lines between fantasy and reality, with many people unsure of how to negotiate these new times. There are rumors of a secret app that allows people special abilities, magical, impossible abilities that is only available at midnight. There are rumors of strange deaths and accidents that the government is doing it’s best to cover up. There is a world of mystery for the players to solve, as well as dealing with their own problems at home and in school.

This game will run on Dreamwidth, with a strong emphasis on AIM chats for ooc communication, as well as special combat focused dungeons and events.

What's a hold?

Putting an arcana (or pb, or concept) on hold is like flagging your interest. We know to expect you to apply, and so we won't accept any applications until we see your work. You can change your arcana at any time just let us know.

Can someone else challenge my hold?

Yes, more than one person can put a hold on the same thing. We won't accept anyone until we've read and reviewed everybody's app, and we'll help whoever doesn't get their first choice find something workable, too.

How long will you honor a hold?

Two weeks. You have to have your app in by this point, or post a note as to when we can expect it if you get delayed.

Can I have an extension?

Yes. You'll get another week.

The rules you need to follow in order to play - we've tried to keep the obvious stuff (godmoding, metagaming, etc) out of the way, as it should be taken for granted. Problems that arise that aren't covered by this rulesheet will be dealt with as they arise.

Below is the application you need to fill out to join the game. The app is split into two parts, a public and hidden section. All comments will be screened at first, and we will unscreen the public information so it can be seen by other players. The hidden section will be kept a secret, so other players cannot see it.

Applications here are not expecting a fully fleshed out character. We only look for a consistent design, an interesting premise, and someone who will fit into the spirit of the game. Characters will change and grow, and you will not be expected to strictly adhere the personality and history you write here. That said, we expect to see some thought put into the character, and time put into the application.

It’s 2055. In five years the World’s Fair is coming to Japan, and a multi-billion dollar project has been signed by the Prime Minister to update Tokyo in preparation. They plan to bring the virtual reality world into the real world, overlapping the two. Parts of the city will be updated one by one, bringing automated trains and cars, with virtual overlays that lets people see each other controlling their avatars in the real world. It’s being celebrated as Japan taking the first steps in the future before any other country.

The virtual world network, Sefira, has been around for nearly five years now, and is becoming entrenched in all parts of the globe. People use it for meeting up with friends in virtual spaces, taking on humanoid avatars that reflect who they want to be. It’s used by adults and kids alike, filled with virtual cafes, bowling alleys, and simulations of space ships and fantasy realms.

The Prime Minister’s new bill has set a plan in action, that will merge the Sefira with the real world. One district at a time will be implementing the Augmented Reality, allowing users to user their Sefira headset to see the world around them in a VR space. They will see other people’s avatars, interact with stores and restaurants, all in the real world with the Sefira world overlaying it. Trains, buses, taxis, cars, robots, everything will be running on the Sefira network, bringing everything into the New Age.

Despite the move to the future, there are people coming down with what the news is calling “Departure Syndrome”. Almost like the “Apathy Syndrome” found decades ago on Tatsumi Port Island, people are deciding to give up on the real world entirely, living in the VR World until their bodies whither and die. The “infected” sometimes cannot even tell what is real or fantasy anymore. There’s no physical causes, and many are simply blaming VR addiction as the cause. The government is adamant it’s not a problem, that unrolling the Augmented world is not going to be delayed.

At the same time, rumors of a new simulation in Sefira, called the Midnight World, is circulating among the younger generation. A world where people can escape to, where things that should be impossible can be made real. Wishes can be granted, love can be found, special powers given to those who can find the mysterious place on the network.

A new class at the Matsubayashi High School is just beginning, located in a historic part of the city. They are part of a district that is fighting the Augmentation of the rest of the city, preferring their old ways to the new ones. How will they handle the changing tides, when it feels like reality and fantasy are becoming indistinguishable?
